I think the weird colours are mostly a product of people going a little crazy with photoshop because their so excited about this new cool effect they can create. Subtlety comes with time. Good stuff, I had a bookmark to some really nice ones in and around Toronto (very subtle) but i can't seem to find it now... Totally agree.
